This was a day for office cleaning and rearranging. We moved one office into the other and storage type things into the first office. Also, bought new trash bags!
Actual work was more joy with Windows servers. In another spot I should write up what I found to hopefully help other people who have to use Windows Installer to setup ASP.NET web applications on IIS. As of right now it's kind of a pain, so that's something to write about elsewhere.
The good news is that I did figure it out, and even better news is that tomorrow is a work party at the curling club to get everything set up for the season. It will be fun to see everyone and hopefully the news about the ice will be good and it will be ready sometime this coming week. Opening day is supposed to be Thursday, so hooray.
This evening my sister is making a cake.
Not a lot to say today, I guess. Workwise things turned back to
Windows servers today, which was frustrating and then rewarding and
then frustrating again. But now I know what to do next, as painful as
it will be. And knowing is something something.
As
I was leaving work I noticed this small tree/shrub that's always been
right by the door. Today, though, it had turned a mix of bright red
and orange colors which made me smile. I took a picture.
Today I spent some time trying to figure out what linux distributions would be most likely to be used for servers in K-12 schools. Ubuntu is pretty hot these days, as they say on TV, but I don't know if that's an accurate reflection of the education world. Dell sells servers with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE Linux Enterprise, but neither of those are free. There are a few groups out there promoting linux in schools, but more from the point of view of desktop installations rather than servers. Of those, Edubuntu looks interesting and the $100 laptop will be a sort of Fedora thing.
What a joyfully geeky topic to write about today.
I would really like to make my own computer-controlled analog dial gauges, sort of like the Executive Dashboard from Ambient Devices. In fact, if their developer resources for that were ready to go I would just buy one of those. There is The Device, which might also do, but it also might be a bit over the top even for me. And I'm just a tad jealous that somebody else made my invention before me.
